Anand Meets With Latvian President

The Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today met with Edgars Rinkēvičs, President of the Republic of Latvia, during her visit to Riga.

Minister Anand reaffirmed the depth and breadth of the Canada-Latvia relationship, as well as Canada's enduring commitment to Latvia's security through Canada's leadership as framework nation of NATO Multinational Brigade Latvia.

The Minister and the President exchanged views on the evolving Euro-Atlantic security environment, including Russia's ongoing aggression against Ukraine, and they emphasized the need to maintain transatlantic unity. They agreed on the importance of coalitions of capable, like-minded partners in delivering concrete results on democratic resilience, accountability and collective security.

The Minister thanked the President for Latvia's hosting of Canadian Armed Forces members deployed under Operation REASSURANCE and for Latvia's consistent support for Canada's engagement with the European Union. Minister Anand also congratulated President Rinkēvičs on Latvia's first-ever term on the UN Security Council.

The Minister and the President agreed to continue advancing Canada-Latvia cooperation across the political, security and economic pillars of the two countries' relationship.
