Animal Justice Party Candidate shaves head to help animals

Animal Justice Party

In the recent 2021 state election, our AJP candidate Sharon McLay may not have won a seat, but this hasn’t stopped her from encouraging the new and returning MPs to do a good deed.

“I had an idea during my campaign to do something to give back to the community,” said Ms McLay.  “I pledged that if I won a seat, I would donate my refunded $400 nomination fee to Big Ears Animal Sanctuary, and if I didn’t win, I would shave my head!”

“To that end, I have decided to donate my hair to Sustainable Salons to be made into wigs for those with medical needs. At the same time, I’m asking my fellow candidates who were successful at the recent state election to donate their returned $400 nomination fee to Big Ears Animal Sanctuary in Longford.”

Ms McLay created a Facebook fundraiser to allow for donations to the Sanctuary, which has raised over $1,500. To date, only one of the successful candidates in the Lyons electorate have contributed to the fundraiser.

Jacqui and Brett Steele, who run Big Ears Animal Sanctuary, provide a wonderful community service, helping to rehabilitate and rehome a variety of animals. They also give sanctuary to those who have nowhere else to go. Brett and Jacqui do this on a shoestring and rely on the generous donations from the community to continue their work.

The head shave will be held at 11am 5 June 2021 at Big Ears Animal Sanctuary in Longford.  World champion shearer, Steve Rigby, of Rigby Shearing Fingal will do the head shaving honours.
