Appeal for witnesses – Assault at Southport, QLD

Detectives are appealing for information from the public following investigations into an alleged assault incident at Southport on the weekend, Queensland Police say.

Around 3.30am on Saturday, July 22 it will be alleged a group of males approached three men exiting a tram station platform on Queen Street.

While leaving it will be alleged several members of the group then became involved in a verbal altercation with them.

It will further be alleged members of the group then punched and kicked the men to the head, causing them to collapse backwards onto the pavement. One of the men is alleged to have also been struck on the head with a glass bottle.

The victims, two aged 19 and the other 20, sustained non life threatening injuries as a result of the alleged assault.

A short time later police arrested five men, two aged 18, two 19 and another 19.

All five men have been charged with three counts each of assault occasioning bodily harm and appeared at the Southport Magistrates Court yesterday where they were granted bail to reappear on August 15.

Detectives are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or knows of any other people involved to contact police.

They would also like to speak with anyone who may have recorded the incident on a mobile phone.

Investigations are continuing.
