4 Feb 2019

The closing date for the second funding round from the Aboriginal Fishing Trust Fund is approaching, it is time to focus on getting applications finalised so that they can be considered in this funding round.

Aboriginal people, businesses and community groups are encouraged to apply for grants or loans from the Trust for projects that relate to fisheries resources.

Group Director, Peter Turnell said the Trust aims to fund a wide variety of activities across coastal and inland regions that enhance, protect or promote Aboriginal cultural fishing or provide fishing related economic opportunities for Aboriginal communities.

"This is the second year funding has been on offer, with last year seeing funding allocated to a variety of cultural projects as well as supporting business," Mr Turnell said.

"A little over $500,000 in funding is available this year which stands to provide meaningful support for cultural projects, existing businesses or new ventures.

"Funds can be used to support projects including commercial fishing businesses and aquaculture operations; enhancing cultural fishing grounds; education programs; and cultural fishing workshops.

"The Aboriginal Fishing Advisory Council, with assistance from the Aboriginal Fishing Trust Expenditure Committee, will assess the applications and then make their recommendations over expenditure to the Minister for Primary Industries.

Information on how to apply, including application forms, is available on the DPI website at https://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fishing/aboriginal-fishing/AFTF/apply-for-funds.

Applications for funding from the Aboriginal Fishing Trust Fund are invited annually between November and February each year. Applications for the current funding round close on 27 February 2019.
