Applications sought for Chairperson of Public Trustee Board

Elise Archer,Attorney-General

Minister for Justice

Applications are now being sought from suitably qualified and experienced people interested in being considered for the position of Chairperson of the Public Trustee Board.

The Public Trustee plays an important role in the Tasmanian community, interacting with Tasmanians at some of the most difficult times in their lives.

The successful applicant will have demonstrated experience in leading successful development and functioning of a high performing Board, and ensuring an inclusive and effective Board culture.

In particular, the new Chairperson will, in conjunction with the Board and the CEO, lead the continued implementation of the recommendations of the independent review undertaken by Damian Bugg QC AM.

This includes changing the way the Public Trustee and representative decision-makers understand and uphold their duties and functions under the Act, moving away from the current 'best interests' model to a 'rights, will and preference' decision-making approach.

While the recruitment process is undertaken, Ms Therese Taylor has been appointed as interim Chairperson.

Ms Taylor is well suited to the role given her extensive professional background in a range of leadership roles across the community, public and private sectors, and having held numerous board positions, including as a Director of the Public Trustee Board since November 2020.

The role of Chairperson became vacant following the decision of previous Chairperson, Mr Mark Scanlon, to resign from the role effective from 11 March 2022.
