Ensuring the safe and efficient operation of Montreal's federal bridges is essential to facilitating travel for residents of and visitors to the region and to moving millions of dollars in goods across the country each day.

Today the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, announced the appointment of Sandra Martel as Chief Executive Officer of Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated (JCCBI).

Ms. Martel has been with JCCBI since 2006 in various roles. Following the departure of the former CEO, she agreed to act as Interim CEO; at the time she was a Senior Director, a position she had accepted in 2012. Ms. Martel has over 23 years of experience in the field of civil engineering, including working in research and development at Université de Sherbrooke and in the areas of project management and business development at Expertech and Bell Canada.

This appointment is part of the Government of Canada's new approach to Governor in Council appointments. This approach involves an open, transparent and merit-based selection process that emphasizes gender parity and reflects Canada's diversity, a process that will enable Ministers to make appointment recommendations for positions within their respective portfolios by providing them with information and guidance.

"Residents of the Greater Montreal area can be confident about JCCBI's commitment to safely operating and maintaining the region's federal bridges. Ms. Martel's extensive knowledge in the field of civil engineering, many years' experience in the organization and excellent work as interim CEO equip her well to manage large-scale projects for JCCBI in the coming years, particularly the deconstruction of the existing Champlain Bridge and major reinforcement work on the metal structure of the Jacques Cartier Bridge."
