Archer must commit to urgent funding for Refugee Legal Service

Tasmanian Labor

Attorney-General Elise Archer must give a firm commitment to provide additional urgent government funding to the Tasmanian Refugee Legal Service in light of the crisis which continues to unfold in Afghanistan.

Shadow Attorney-General Ella Haddad said the continuing situation in Afghanistan was devastating and meant that demand on the Refugee Legal Service had grown to unprecedented levels.

"The local Tasmanian Afghan community is in an incredibly difficult situation as they witness the unfolding tragedy in Afghanistan," Ms Haddad said.

"As the community suffers greatly, the Tasmanian Refugee Legal Service is working around the clock as fast they can to assist people to progress visa applications.

"The Tasmanian Refugee Legal Service urgently needs emergency funding to cope with this added and unprecedented demand.

"Ms Archer must commit to providing additional urgent funding in tomorrow's State Budget.

"In response to my question in State Parliament today, the Minister gave a commitment to look into the matter.

"The community will be watching very closely see if she delivers on that commitment."
