Are You Living Disaster Ready?

Kempsey Shire Council

Over the long weekend, we saw increased fire activity across the Kempsey Shire, a timely reminder that natural disasters can strike at any time. While we're no strangers to storms and bushfires, the risk is significantly higher from September to April.

This storm season, New South Wales is expecting more frequent and intense weather events, including lightning, large hail, strong winds and heavy rainfall. These conditions can lead to flash flooding, coastal erosion and storm surges. At the same time, fires are a growing concern, especially during dry and windy conditions.

Being prepared is the best way to protect yourself, your family, your property and your business.

Start by understanding your risk. Do you live in a bushfire prone area? Knowing what to expect helps you take the right actions. You can create your emergency plan online in just 15 minutes at nsw.gov.au/emergency/prepare. It's also important to pack an emergency kit with essentials you may need if you have to leave quickly.

Take time to learn the Australian Warning System, which uses consistent icons and colours across all natural disasters:

  • Advice (Yellow) – Stay informed, no immediate danger
  • Watch and Act (Orange) – Conditions are changing, take action
  • Emergency Warning (Red) – Immediate danger, act now

Stay informed by downloading the Hazards Near Me app for real-time alerts. Other useful apps include:

  • Emergency Plus – share your exact location with Triple Zero
  • Live Traffic NSW – check road closures and conditions
  • BOM Weather – get accurate forecasts and warnings

Check bushfire danger ratings regularly. These range from No Rating to Catastrophic, with clear guidance on what actions to take. Ratings are based on weather, fuel loads and other environmental factors, and help you understand the level of threat in your area.

And don't forget the value of knowing your neighbours. In times of crisis, they can be your first source of help and information. Building connections now can make a big difference later.
