Art from heart for Grand Pacific Walk - Wollongong

Want to place your mark on a world class site? We're installing a new public artwork at the Coalcliff viewing platform along the Grand Pacific Walk and need your help to complete it.

Now that Stage 1 of the Grand Pacific Walk has been completed, we've commissioned artist Col Henry to create a marine grade, stainless steel sculpture to go on the observation deck between Coalcliff and Stanwell Park.

The name of the proposed artwork is 'Reflect' and the artist has invited the community to participate by submitting small drawings and meaningful words to be incorporated into the design.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said that the artwork presented an opportunity for residents and visitors to leave their mark on the landscape.

"A key part of this sculpture is community engagement. We're asking community members to submit drawings and words or phrases that have a connection to the site and environment.

"Throughout the design process, artist Col Henry will be speaking directly with community groups, individuals and local primary schools to encourage the local community to be involved and contribute to the artwork. We know this is a much-loved area of our beautiful city and this is an opportunity for everyone in our community to share a piece of this connection to this space."

The artist and artwork concept was selected by Council and a member of the Public Art Advisory Panel from a total of 25 artist applications. Installation of the sculpture is scheduled to be completed by May 2021.

The art installation is funded by Wollongong City Council's Public Art Program.

"People of all ages are encouraged to contribute to this unique and inspirational public artwork," said Cr Bradbery.

"This is something that will remain in place along the Grand Pacific Walk for a long period of time. It's important that our community feels ownership over the artwork and plays a part in its design and construction."
