Artwork Gifted to the People of Darwin

On behalf of the people of Darwin, Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis was delighted to accept a painting by renowned Northern Territory artist, Geoff Todd gifted by local business owners of Airducter, Dominic and Deborah Fracaro.

The gift of this artwork to the Darwin community celebrates both a local business that has thrived for 35 years contributing to the Darwin community, and, the essence of life in the Territory.

The painting titled 'Nexus' is a celebration of a true Territory icon and the means by which many Territorians indulge their love of the outdoors: the humble four wheel drive. The painting takes pride of place at the City of Darwin's Civic Centre for the community to enjoy.

"Geoff painted the piece of art as a fun piece that captures the fact that Territorians do not take themselves too seriously. Geoff's work continues to challenge us to reconsider our lives and values and the piece is a perfect fit for Darwin" said Dominic Fracaro, from Airducter.

In the Northern Territory and especially on communities, the 4WD is part of the culture, the landscape, society, work and fun. It is most likely diesel, has a bull-bar, a winch fitted and driving lights at least. These additions don't transform the vehicle into something to step back from and admire from a distance, but something ready to go and be part of NT life.

Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis, who accepted the gifted piece on behalf of the city, reflected upon his admiration for Todd's work.

"Geoff Todd is a wonderful artist and his works really strike a chord with Territorians and what it means to be a Territorian. I've been a big fan of Geoff's work for many years and was fortunate enough to open an exhibition of Geoff's work in Sydney a few years ago. When the opportunity to display one of Geoff's pieces here at the Civic Centre presented itself, I was thrilled."

"On behalf of the city, I thank Airducter for their generosity in gifting this piece to the people of Darwin and in doing so, celebrating and supporting our community. I'm sure this artwork will inspire many happy memories of life in the Territory" said the Lord Mayor.

I would also like to congratulate both Geoff Todd and Deborah Fracaro for being recognised with Australia Day Honours this year, Geoff for his services to visual arts and Deborah for her service to the Darwin community," he added.

Geoff Todd's painting 'Nexus' is on display to the public at the City of Darwin Civic Centre located on Harry Chan Avenue, Darwin.
