ASEAN and Human rights

In the last weeks, ASEAN published different Statements about the human rights situation in Myanmar and the Democratic People´s Republic of Korea (DPRK).

In the case of the DPRK, the ASEAN Foreign Ministers showed their concern regarding the continuing missile tests by the DPRK, which could threaten the regional peace and stability.

The conference made clear that ASEAN complies with the previous UN Security Council resolution, on top of that they pointed out the important role of international cooperation within the region concerning the safety.

The Statement concerning Myanmar shows, even more, the importance of regional cooperation as a problem-solving tool. Regarding the presented case, the ASEAN countries rely on bilateral discussions and the implementation of the Five-point Consensus from 2021.
