Attempted escape lawful custody charges in Cairns, QLD

Police have charged three men after they allegedly attempted to escape police custody Sunday morning, Queensland Police say.

It will be alleged at 10.40am the men assaulted a Queensland Police Service employee in the exercise yard at the Cairns Watchhouse, striking him a number of times before attempting to escape.

The employee managed to withdraw to safety from the men and the watchhouse was placed into lockdown. The three men returned to their cells without further incident.

The 48-year-old male employee was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

A 27-year-old Cooyah Beach man and an 18-year-old Smithfield man have both been charged with robbery with violence in company, attempted deprivation of liberty and attempted escape lawful custody.

A 19-year-old Arriga man has been charged with robbery with violence in company and attempted escape lawful custody.

All three men are due to appear in Cairns Magistrates Court on October 29.
