AusBiotech Applauds Albanese Win, Urges Life Sci Focus

AusBiotech welcomes the re-election of the Albanese Government and the opportunity to continue working in partnership to advance a productive, innovation-driven economy while deepening a whole of government focus on Australia's life sciences sector at this critical juncture.

As the national peak body for life sciences, AusBiotech reaffirms its commitment to advancing the sector in partnership with the government. As a sector that has the potential to deliver improved health outcomes, greater economic prosperity and enhanced health security for Australia, now is the time to prioritise life sciences.

AusBiotech's CEO, Rebekah Cassidy, extended her congratulations to the Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, on his decisive victory.

"The Albanese Government's re-election presents a renewed opportunity to strengthen Australia's life sciences sector and deepen our collaborative efforts," she said.

With more than 2,900 life science organisations across the country, employing 1 in every 60 Australians, the sector is a vital national asset. It contributes to the health of all Australians by translating world-leading research into life-changing health innovations.

"Now is the time to address the long held and stubborn challenges that have held Australia's life sciences sector back. We need bold leadership and whole of government prioritisation, as we have seen in peer global markets," said Rebekah.

"In a rapidly evolving global landscape, marked by geopolitical and trade shifts, supply chain challenges, ageing populations, chronic disease and more, the need to prioritise Australia's world-leading biotechnology and medical technology industry has never been more pressing.

"We need to continue building, scaling, and retaining our globally competitive biotechnology and medical technology capability as a national asset.

"To unlock the full potential of Australia's life sciences industry, a whole-of-government approach is essential, starting with the establishment of a National Life Sciences Council as a strategic partnership between industry and government.

"This partnership is critical not only to address the challenges of a rapidly evolving global trade environment but also to drive a cohesive, long-term national strategy for the sector."

AusBiotech is calling on the re-elected Australian Government to:

  • A whole-of-government National Life Sciences Strategy to guide long-term policy, investment, and coordination.
  • The establishment of an Australian Life Sciences Council, bringing together government and industry to shape a shared vision and address sector-wide challenges.
  • Recognition of life sciences as a priority industry for national growth, innovation, and resilience.
  • Greater investment in data and evidence-based policy to support smarter decision-making and drive measurable outcomes.

"We have a unique opportunity to continue to nurture and build a globally competitive life sciences sector by harnessing our strengths in medical research, clinical trials, and advanced manufacturing — and ensuring that more innovations are developed and commercialised onshore in Australia."

AusBiotech looks forward to continued dialogue with the Albanese Government as we work together to shape a strong future for Australian life sciences.
