Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced Katherine as Australian of the Year at a ceremony in Canberra on Sunday 25 January.
The honour recognises and celebrates Australians who demonstrate courage, inspire others and make significant contributions to their community and the nation.
'This incredible honour isn't mine alone,' said Katherine. 'It belongs to all who have built Australia's space sector. To the Australian Space Agency. To those that have encouraged and educated me. And especially my family.
'I'd also like to acknowledge the Australian Government and the Department of Industry, Science and Resources for supporting my astronaut training, recognising the immense benefits for Australia.'
Katherine was one of just 25 people, from more than 22,500 applicants, to pass all stages of the European Space Agency's (ESA) astronaut selection. She was first Australian astronaut to graduate from the European Astronaut Centre.
Since returning home, Katherine shares her knowledge across the country and inspires thousands of Australians.
As Australian of the Year and a woman in STEM, Katherine shows all young Australians they belong in STEM.
