Australian households and businesses can now access more affordable, renewable energy through the Australian Government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program.
Australia is a world leader in rooftop solar with more than 4 million rooftop solar PV systems installed across the country. However, only one in 40 households have installed batteries due to the high upfront cost.
Under the program, households and businesses may be eligible for around a 30% discount on the cost of installing small-scale batteries connected to new or existing rooftop solar.
The discount:
- depends on the size of the battery installed to ensure people are able to pick an affordable battery that is right for their needs.
- will be fully funded by the Australian Government. This will ensure no extra costs are passed on to consumers.
- will be reviewed to ensure that support is in line with decreasing battery costs.
The Clean Energy Regulator (CER) is delivering the program through the existing Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES). The SRES has safely and successfully delivered solar discounts since 2011. Work is underway with state and territory electrical safety and fair trading agencies to ensure batteries are bought and installed safely.
For independent advice on rooftop solar and batteries, consumers can use the Solar Consumer Guide and SunSpot calculator.
Greater access to small-scale batteries will:
- help households make the most of cheap and clean solar power by storing it for when it is needed most
- reduce the draw on the electricity system at times of peak demand meaning a more stable electricity grid for everyone.
