Australia has received an international award for its work to protect migratory wildlife.
The Australian Government has been recognised as a Champion Plus under the Migratory Species Champion Programme. The programme is run by the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS).
The award recognises our long-term support for protecting migratory species in Australia and overseas.
It was presented at the 15th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to CMS (COP15). The meeting took place in Brazil from 23 to 29 March 2026.
Migratory species move between countries. They rely on nations working together to:
- protect habitats
- reduce threats
- support sustainable development.
The Migratory Species Champion Programme encourages long term support for migratory wildlife. It helps make sure actions can be planned and delivered on time.
Australia received 2 tributes under the programme. These recognised Australia's funding and work on:
- energy transition with migratory species (2024-2027)
- illegal hunting, taking and trade of migratory birds in the Asia Pacific (2021-2025).
The CMS Secretariat thanked Australia for its support over many years.
Narelle Montgomery, Chair of the CMS Scientific Council, accepted the award for Australia. The CMS Champion Night was held on 23 March 2026 in Brazil.
Australian Government officials attended COP15. They took part in discussions to:
- reduce risks for migratory wildlife
- install new protections for migratory seabirds.
