ITU member states, including Australia, will elect Council representatives for the 2027-2030 term at the Plenipotentiary Conference to be held from 9 to 27 November 2026 in Doha, Qatar.
The ITU is the United Nations specialised agency for telecommunications and digital technology. It allocates radiofrequency spectrum, develops international standards to ensure interoperability of communications networks, and works to close digital divides globally. ITU frameworks underpin the technologies that Australians use every day.
If re-elected, Australia will continue to champion an ITU Council that is inclusive of all ITU member states, reflects the diversity of their perspectives and acts transparently.
An ITU member since 1878, Australia has served in the Council since 1959 and is one of the top financial contributors.
Australia remains focused on strengthening governance arrangements, improving opportunities for women in the telecommunications sector, and supporting all ITU member states to get the connectivity they need.
Australia will continue to amplify Pacific voices in ITU decision making processes to support equitable access to telecommunications and digital technology in our region.
