The successful migration of Australian carbon credit units (ACCUs) to the new Unit and Certificate Registry marks a major milestone, establishing a single, modern platform for managing ACCUs and Safeguard Mechanism credit units (SMCs).
This milestone is a key achievement in our multi-year transformation program to modernise core technology and data systems. The registry forms a foundational part of the market transaction infrastructure, supporting the growth of deep, liquid, transparent and accessible carbon markets. It will also hold certificates for new schemes, including the Nature Repair Market and Guarantee of Origin.
The new blockchain registry makes it simpler and more secure for account holders to manage their ACCUs and SMCs in one place. It provides easier access to information about held units, along with richer data sets and multi-factor authentication to enhance security when transferring units.
The registry helps emitters meet their safeguard obligations and supports Australian businesses to meet their regulatory or voluntary commitments to reduce emissions and promote clean energy use.
The Chair of the Clean Energy Regulator, David Parker, said the registry reflects the Australian Government's commitment to strengthening the integrity, transparency and accessibility of Australia's carbon markets.
'The successful migration of 177,672,533 active and previously cancelled ACCUs, along with the full transaction history of over 2,000 private and Commonwealth ANREU accounts, is a major achievement. By adding additional data to the over 60 million active ACCUs still in circulation, we are providing the market with richer information, strengthening transparency and accessibility for all participants.'
'I would like to thank all those who have worked over an extended period to achieve this major step forward. We have been supported by Trovio, our registry services partner. Trovio's CorTenX service provides the scalable, secure and customisable blockchain ledger that underpins our registry.'
The move to the new registry will also enable new functionality over time, including interoperability between the registry and external account holder systems and trading platforms.
