Australia, Malaysia Halal Pact Boosts Producers

The Hon Julie Collins MP
Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry

The Albanese Labor Government is delivering new opportunities for Australian red meat producers with an Australia-Malaysia Strategic Halal Red Meat Partnership to strengthen collaboration between the two countries on trade in halal red meat and meat products.

The partnership was signed during the Prime Minister's visit to Malaysia this week.

Malaysia is a highly valued trading partner for Australia, with Australian halal-certified sheep, goat and beef meat exports to Malaysia valued at over $447 million in the last financial year.

The new partnership further enhances bilateral cooperation on halal matters helping to safeguard and improve access to the Malaysian market for Australian halal-certified red meat and meat products.

The partnership bolsters Australia's strong reputation in the Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) region as a trusted supplier of these products.

A key activity under the Australia-Malaysia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, the partnership will also support future collaboration on halal standards, research and electronic certification for halal red meat products.

In 2025 the Albanese Labor Government announced the approval of 6 meat export establishments, including two new approvals, bringing more high-quality Australian halal red meat to Malaysia.

There are now 27 halal-certified Australian establishments that are eligible to export halal beef, sheep and goat meat products to Malaysian consumers - a valuable and mutually beneficial trade for both countries.

The Albanese Labor Government has worked tirelessly to expand opportunities for our farmers and producers to export our world-class products on the international stage.

Since coming to Government, we have recorded more than 256 market access achievements for our farmers and producers - supporting more regional jobs and strengthening regional economies.
