Australia Pledges Record $300M for Rural Aged Care

Department of Health

The Albanese Government is committing record levels of funding to rebuild our aged care system so every older Australian can get the world-class care they deserve, wherever they live.

To boost access to high quality residential aged care and housing for aged care workers outside of major cities, we're investing $300 million in the latest round of the Aged Care Capital Assistance Program (ACCAP).

Today's announcement builds on $651 million already invested by the Government through ACCAP since 2022, bringing our total investment to $951 million.

Round 3 of ACCAP will fund a total of 66 infrastructure projects to upgrade or build new aged care homes as well as deliver staff accommodation to attract and retain workers in a range of regional, rural and remote communities.

The selected projects will deliver 315 new or reopened aged care beds, improving access where it is needed and helping older patients get the care they need, in the most appropriate setting, sooner.

$87 million will be allocated across 12 projects to support more older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to access services that respect culture, connection to Country and community.

The single largest grant awarded to date under the ACCAP will also be awarded in this round. A $51 million investment to build a new 94-bed residential care home in Broken Hill will aim to address viability challenges in the region and ensure older people can age with dignity in their own community.

The Government will also release an Expression of Interest in October to identify a provider to partner in delivering a new 120-bed residential care home in Darwin, which will deliver our $60 million election commitment to expand aged care access in the Northern Territory.
