Australia's oldest theatre reopens its doors

Elise Archer,Minister for the Arts

It was exciting to visit the new and improved Theatre Royal today, seeing first-hand the wonderful work that has been happening behind the scenes as part of the $96 million The Hedberg project.

As Australia's oldest working theatre, the Theatre Royal holds a place in the hearts of many Tasmanians, which is why it is so wonderful to have audiences back in the building.

Last night, audience members enjoyed Senior Moments - the first show of the 2019 season - while getting a special first glimpse of the Theatre Royal's new extra foyer space, box office, cloakroom and bar.

The Hodgman Liberal Government is proud to have provided $30 million to The Hedberg project, which is being developed in partnership with the University of Tasmania and the Theatre Royal Management Board, with support from the Australian Government.

As well as complementing and enhancing the historic Theatre Royal, The Hedberg will provide a new home for the University of Tasmania's Conservatorium of Music, and other performance venues and public spaces.

We are looking forward to The Hedberg being a vibrant arts precinct which helps to drive Tasmania's creative economy through innovative education and accessible performance spaces.
