Australia Seeks Admins for External Territories

Dept of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications

The Australian Government has started the selection process to appoint an Administrator for Norfolk Island and Administrator for Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands (the Indian Ocean Territories).

The selection process reinforces the Government's commitment to strong regional representation and effective local governance.

Administrators are the Australian Government's most senior representatives in the external territories. The role carries out key statutory, civic and ceremonial duties on behalf of the Australian Government, and supports delivery of services that reflect local priorities.

They also act as a key conduit between the Australian Government and local communities.

Through this selection process, the Australian Government is seeking individuals with the leadership, judgement and resilience to help deliver on government priorities and guide Norfolk Island and the Indian Ocean Territories into the future.

Candidates should be committed to genuine community engagement, respectful and understanding of local culture and capable of delivering tangible outcomes in partnership with residents, stakeholders and all levels of government.

The current Administrator of Norfolk Island, Mr George Plant, and the Administrator of the Indian Ocean Territories, Ms Farzian Zainal, are able to re-apply through this process.

The Government acknowledges the dedication and service they have shown through periods of change and challenge. Their current terms conclude in June 2026.

Advertising for the positions commenced this week through national media and online recruitment platforms, with applications open to all eligible Australians.

Following the merit-based assessment process, final appointments will be made by the Governor-General, on advice from the Australian Government.

The Australian Government remains committed to ensuring that the voices of external territory residents are heard and respected, and shared priorities are achieved.

Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories, Kristy McBain MP said Administrators are more than senior representatives of the Australian Government, they are trusted partners with, and in, the community.

"We are looking for leaders who understand the importance of listening, engaging and working alongside residents to facilitate the Government's agenda and deliver meaningful outcomes for these unique communities.

"I thank Mr Plant and Ms Zainal for their leadership and commitment to their roles. Both have strong relationships with their communities and I'm pleased to confirm they will be eligible to apply as part of this open merit-based process."
