Australia To Advance Pacific COP, Clean Energy At COP30

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen will travel to Belem, Brazil today to lead the Australian delegation at the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30).

Minister Bowen will continue to advocate strongly for Australia's bid to host COP31 in partnership with the Pacific, as well as highlighting our clean energy industry to the world.

Australia has a wealth of natural resources, a highly skilled workforce, and a clear, sensible government agenda, to position the nation as a premier destination for global investment and a ready partner as nations decarbonise their economies.

Australia will continue to show leadership on climate action by supporting efforts to drive down global emissions and combat the worst impacts of climate change.

Pacific nations are particularly vulnerable to climate change. Australia will work alongside them and likeminded nations to deliver real outcomes at COP30.

Australia's ambitious but achievable target to reduce emissions by 62-70% below 2005 levels by 2035 - shows we are playing our part in achieving the Paris Agreement's goals.

Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen said the global meeting was important to demonstrate practical efforts to tackle climate change.

"Global investment in clean energy projects will exceed USD 2 trillion in 2025 - Australia's climate change targets are a big green light to local and international investors that we want to be part of this global shift.

"A Future Made in Australia is a ready-made opportunity for investment, collaboration and securing our future economic prosperity.

"As the National Climate Risk Assessment showed us - our nation has a lot at stake when it comes to climate change but every effort we make now will help avert the worst impacts.

"That's why we want to host COP31 in partnership with the Pacific - to bring the world to the Pacific for the first time and show how together we can fight this existential threat.

"After a wasted decade of the Liberals and Nationals fighting about whether climate change is real, we're returning Australia to the world stage and ensuring we're ready to seize the biggest economic opportunity in our history."

Assistant Minister for Climate Change and Energy Josh Wilson represented Australia in the first week.

COP is the annual climate summit of all states that are parties to the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

COP meetings are a crucial part of ongoing international cooperation on climate change, under the Paris Agreement, and are the peak forum to progress multilateral climate negotiations.

Minister Murray Watt will be acting Minister for Climate Change and Energy in Minister Bowen's absence.
