Australian Government aid injection for Afghanistan crisis 'encouraging'

World Vision Australia CEO Daniel Wordsworth says he is encouraged by Australia's show of support for Afghanistan, after the Government announced a $100 million injection of aid for the embattled nation.

Foreign Minister Marise Payne revealed on Tuesday the Government would contribute $65 million for immediate humanitarian assistance for Afghanistan, and at least $35 million in ongoing humanitarian aid, to 2024. The money comes on top of the Government's development commitment of $200 million over the next four years.

"We know the situation is complex, but along with addressing humanitarian needs in the country, we must find ways to reinvigorate development support over the long term. It must be a high priority," Mr Wordsworth said.

"The Government and the Foreign Minister Marise Payne have stated they remain committed to addressing the humanitarian crisis in the country, and we welcome this ongoing support.

"Partners like World Vision have been part of a massive investment in Afghanistan, particularly over the last 20 years, and we have seen great development gains. We are heavily focussed on being part of Afghanistan's future and protecting those gains."
