The report shows emissions were 455.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (Mt CO2-e), a decrease of 1.6% (7.5 Mt CO2-e) compared with the previous year. At the sector level, year-on-year changes include:
- Decreased electricity emissions (down 3.7%; 5.6 Mt CO2-e), reflecting record renewables generation and the ongoing displacement of coal and gas;
- Decreased fugitive emissions (down 3.3%; 1.5 Mt CO2-e), mainly due to reductions in natural gas venting emissions, new carbon capture and storage activities, and a decline in production from underground coal mining;
- Decreased emissions from agriculture (down 1.0%; 0.8 Mt CO2-e), primarily reflecting lower grazing cattle and sheep numbers;
- Decreased emissions in stationary energy (excluding electricity) (down 0.2%; 0.2 Mt CO2-e), reflecting decreased combustion activity including for oil and gas extraction;
- Increased emissions from transport (up 0.2%; 0.2 Mt CO2-e), mainly driven by increased diesel consumption for road transport and increased domestic aviation activity, partially offset by decreased road transport petrol consumption; and
- Increased emissions from industrial processes and product use (up 2.1%; 0.6 Mt CO2-e), primarily due to increased production of steel.
Emissions in the year to March 2026 were 25.0% below 2005 levels (the base year for Australia's 43% reduction by 2030 target under the Paris Agreement).
