Aviation incident, Porcupine

Police are investigating after a helicopter recently crashed in North Queensland.

Around 11.30am the aircraft wreckage was found in a creek bed, just off Pretty Plains Camden Park Road west of Hughenden.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority deployed assets after an R22 helicopter failed to reach its destination overnight.

The AMSA Challenger Jet was called to conduct a search for the helicopter just after 7pm but was called off by 2am this morning, due to severe weather.

The Challenger resumed the search this morning along with six search and rescue helicopters and an additional fixed-wing aircraft.

The pilot, an 84-year-old male was located deceased.

Police investigations are continuing with the assistance from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.
