Award Nomination Can Mean So Much

Natasha Brusco, and George's Gymnastics Program, were the big winners at last year's Sir John Monash awards.

And, as we launch the 2026 awards, she's urged Monash to get behind the program by nominating someone who works tirelessly for the community.

Just by nominating, you can make a massive difference.

"Community‑driven nominations matter because they shine a light on the people whose dedication often goes unseen, yet whose impact is deeply felt," Natasha said.

"Many local initiatives, programs and acts of service exist only because individuals give their time, energy and compassion to support others.

"They also celebrate the shared values that shape the City of Monash, highlighting the importance of compassion, inclusion and community‑led contribution."

Every year, Monash comes together to honour outstanding contributions from members of our community, with the presentation of awards.

Last year Natasha was named Volunteer of the Year for her groundbreaking inclusive gymnastics program and later claimed the awards' highest honour, the Sir John Monash Award for Outstanding Leadership.

The program provides 200 children with disabilities, from seven specialist schools, with free access to inclusive gymnastics classes. In providing a home for the program, as well as invaluable financial and logistical support, Waverley Gymnastics Centre was named the Outstanding Advocate of People with a Disability.

"Winning the 2025 award was an incredibly meaningful recognition of everything the program stands for," Natasha said.

"It celebrated the essence of George's Gymnastics Program and the children at its centre.

"It recognised a community‑driven initiative that gives children with disabilities movement, joy and a genuine sense of belonging.

"And it honoured the dedication of the schools, families, Monash University students and Waverley Gymnastics Centre staff who pour their time and care into the program.

"Receiving the award was also profoundly meaningful to me personally. It acknowledged the lived experience that inspired this work and honoured the children—especially my son George—whose courage and joy guide every decision we make.

"Most of all, it reinforced that inclusion matters deeply to our community and strengthened my commitment to creating spaces where every child can move, play and belong with confidence."
