Back-to-school messages must remain clear

Tasmanian Labor
  • Most schools reopened today for term two
  • Clear message to keep children home unless no other choice
  • Labor thanks hard-working staff for keeping home and school learning environments equitable
  • The government must ensure it communicates clearly with Tasmanians about the reopening of schools for term two so that parents, students and staff can have confidence in the measures being taken to provide a safe learning environment for everyone.

Shadow Education Minister Josh Willie said term two, which started today for many schools, must not see a repeat of the confusion generated last term by conflicting statements.

"The message from the Premier last week was clear," said Mr Willie.

"The decision to keep schools in the North West closed due to the threat of COVID-19 was the right one, as was the clarification for the rest of the state - to keep children home unless they do not have education support at home.

"While this has been a trying time for parents, staff and students, that sort of clarity is needed for as long as the COVID-19 threat remains.

"Principals, teachers and schools are still responsible for educating students and it is their job to lead learning from home and support families whenever needed.

"We recognise that there are essential workers, like health workers, who cannot facilitate at-home learning and still require the provision of face-to-face learning for children, and that some vulnerable families may require the ongoing support of schools, which should continue.

The work done by school staff and the Department of Education has been invaluable in making this situation tenable and providing children and young people with quality learning opportunities during this difficult time.

"We also recognise the efforts of the union movement and their constructive approach to ensure the best possible arrangements for schools.

"The commitment to our students and equitable learning has been unwavering and we thank the parents, carers, students, teachers and all school staff for their patience.

"With the right decisions now, we can look forward to our schools returning to normal as soon as possible."
