Backing Live Music Right Across Victoria

VIC Premier

Melbourne is Australia's live music capital and the Allan Labor Government is backing local artists and venues to keep music playing right across the state.

Minister for the Environment Steve Dimopoulos today announced two major reviews to modernise noise rules for live music and outdoor events - cutting red tape and making it easier to host live music in Victoria.

The EPA will review the designated Live Music Precincts requirements - which is an area where live music is recognised as a priority activity, making it easier to host live music activities in the precincts.

This review will cut red tape and make it easier for councils to set up these precincts in their suburbs - creating more opportunities for live music.

The Government will also review existing noise control rules within designated Live Music Precincts, to create more opportunities for Victorian artists to perform while ensuring they meet community expectations.

We're asking Victorians to have their say on how we regulate and manage music noise from outdoor events so we can continue hosting vibrant cultural events in our cities and towns while respecting local communities.

Live music brings people together, boosts local businesses and creates jobs - whether that's in the city, the suburbs or the regions.

The music and entertainment industry, land managers, event attendees and residents living near outdoor event spaces can have their say when consultation begins on 31 October.

Both reviews aim to support jobs, tourism and growth in Victoria's creative industries and reinforce Victoria's reputation as one of the world's outdoor event and live music capitals.

As stated by Minister for Environment Steve Dimopoulos

"Melbourne is known for its outdoor music events and updating these rules is all about making sure Victoria can host more and more outdoors music events."

"Victorians love live music, so we are making it easier for artists to play throughout Victoria from bars in inner Melbourne to pubs in regional Victoria, I encourage everyone to have their say."

As stated by Member for Northern Metropolitan Enver Erdogan

"We are proudly backing our live music scene throughout Victoria, from first time performers to world famous artists - this review will create more opportunities to play while respecting local residents."
