- Office of Fair Trading inspectors have assessed more than 300 showbags ahead of the Royal Queensland Show (Ekka), which begins at the Brisbane Showgrounds tomorrow.
- As part of annual safety inspections, only one unsafe toy was identified and removed.
- Inspectors will continue to monitor product safety throughout the show.
The Crisafulli Government is keeping the focus on fun at this year's Ekka, delivering a showbag safety blitz that led to one unsafe toy being removed.
Office of Fair Trading inspectors have assessed the contents of 373 showbags for unsafe toys, novelties and products, with eight taken for further investigation.
Inspectors focused on button batteries, projectile toys, and toys containing magnets as part of the annual checks, to ensure all items meet Australian mandatory safety standards.
Only one toy – a novelty torch - did not comply with consumer safety law and was removed, after inspectors found the screw-down button battery compartment was not secure.
Button batteries pose a significant risk to young children if swallowed or inserted, and all products must have child resistant battery compartments to prevent children from accessing them.
Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and Minister for Integrity Deb Frecklington thanked Ekka vendors and showbag suppliers for their commitment to product safety.
"Showbags are a much-loved part of the Ekka experience, and our inspectors are ensuring they're only filled with fun," the Attorney-General said.
"I was pleased to see only one non-compliant item identified, with the supplier acting immediately to rectify the issue.
"Ekka vendors and showbag suppliers do a great job ensuring the safety of Queensland families enjoying the show."
