A new CCTV Community Safety Network is set to be rolled out across key locations in Ballina and Lennox Head, supporting safer public spaces and helping to deter crime and anti-social behaviour.
Ballina Shire Council has received $1 million in Australian Government funding through the Strengthening Community Safety – Election Commitment Funding program to deliver the new network.
The project will install CCTV cameras and supporting communications infrastructure across priority locations in Ballina and Lennox Head, providing improved monitoring of public spaces, to support NSW Police investigations and response activities.
Ballina Shire Mayor Sharon Cadwallader welcomed the funding and said the project supports Council's broader commitment to enhancing community safety.
"Everyone should feel safe and confident when they are out and about in our town centres and public spaces, and this project is another way we can work with NSW Police and our other partners to support that," Cr Cadwallader said.
"CCTV can play an important role in deterring crime and anti-social behaviour, while also providing valuable information to police when incidents do occur.
"We know community safety matters to our residents, businesses and visitors, and this investment will give us another tool to help create safer and more welcoming public spaces."
The CCTV network will include a combination of camera technology at priority locations, supported by communications infrastructure and a centralised video management system.
NSW Police will have access to the network to support operational and investigative activities.
Preliminary works are underway, with further works continuing across Ballina CBD. Installation will be staged, with timing for future works and locations still being finalised.
The CCTV network will be managed in line with relevant privacy requirements, including controls around who can access footage and how it is stored and managed.
