Balwyn Driver Caught Speeding, Window Smashed

Nunawading Highway Patrol officers allegedly clocked a cancelled p-plater travelling more than 40km/h over the speed limit in Balwyn North last night.

Police caught sight of the white Toyota sedan, driving at an alleged speed of 108km/h in a 60 zone, on Burke Road about 8pm.

Officers pulled the car over.

It is alleged the driver, a 20-year-old Lalor man, admitted to speeding and driving without a valid licence.

The long weekend didn't improve for the man when police allegedly spotted a smashed windscreen on the Toyota in addition to a bald tyre.

The Toyota was defected and impounded for a period of 30 days.

The man is expected to be charged on summons for excessive speed and other driving offences.

The detection forms part of Operation Amity, a statewide road policing operation conducted over the Australia Day long weekend.

Police will be highly visible and enforcing in an effort to reduce road trauma, targeting impaired driving, speed, fatigue and distraction offences.

The operation commenced on Friday 23 January and runs until 11:59pm on Monday 26 January.
