Barnett Urged to Support Tasmanian Veterans & RSL

Tas Labor

It's time for Veteran Affairs Minister Guy Barnett to stand up for Tasmanian Veterans and the RSL regarding a stadium being built next to the Hobart Cenotaph.

It's clear Premier Jeremy Rockliff sees his stadium project as a higher priority than the respectful wishes of thousands of Tasmanian veterans.

On ABC radio on 22 May, RSL Tasmania CEO John Hardy outlined the reasons why 80 per cent of Tasmanian veterans are opposed to the stadium.

He said:

"We don't believe it is a good spot for a stadium."

"No way would you be able to build this in Melbourne by the Shrine."

"There is no way this would be accepted in Canberra by the unnamed soldier."

"These are things that I think most people would understand."

Mr Barnett spent Anzac Day in France at Villers-Bretonneaux.

Can he imagine a stadium being built right beside that powerful and sacred memorial?
