Bass Coast prepares for School Leavers Week

After the pandemic stopped many celebrations in 2020, it is expected like years before, that young people from across Victoria will make their way to Phillip Island to celebrate the end of Year 12 this month.

The official School Leavers Week runs from 27 November to 4 December.

Bass Coast Shire Council works together with Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria, local businesses and volunteer agencies to ensure School Leavers Week is a positive experience for young people, their families and the broader community.

Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Brett Tessari explained that every year, thousands of young people flock to coastal towns like Cowes on Phillip Island to celebrate School Leavers Week.

"For many teenagers, this might be their first time away from home, so it's important we do our bit to welcome them and ensure they have a safe and memorable experience in Bass Coast," Cr Tessari said.

"We understand the past two years have been particularly challenging for young people and that with restrictions allowing greater movement, our area will be an attraction for young school leavers to unwind and relax."

Red Frogs and DanceWize will also be at the forefront of School Leavers Week in Cowes throughout the week. These voluntary organisations provide outreach support to young people through peer education and support services, such as free transport, barbecues and cooked breakfasts. DanceWize is a program of Harm Reduction Victoria and utilises peer education to reduce drug and alcohol related harm.

"Together with Red Frogs and DanceWize, as well as our emergency services, Council will have an ongoing presence on the Cowes Foreshore both day and night," Cr Tessari said.

"Informal daytime activities for school leavers will be held during the afternoon hours, with a focus on community safety for all each evening," Cr Tessari concluded.

Council will also provide additional garbage bins on the Cowes foreshore, as well as regular street and toilet cleaning. Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria will have extra resources on location as well.

We encourage residents to contact Council if they have any concerns relating to School Leavers Week on 1300 BCOAST (226 278) or (03) 5671 2211.

In the case of an emergency contact Victoria Police on '000'.
