Bayside's newest park, currently under construction in Wolli Creek, could also become the home of Bayside's largest public artwork.
"This is an exciting opportunity for an artist to create a significant statement close to Wolli Creek station, that will have a visible impact on one of the most popular growth areas in Bayside," Mayor Dr Christina Curry said.
"This project will bring First Nations' art to the forefront of a site located in the heart of Bayside with original artwork that explores the river and its importance in this part of Sydney."
Council is looking for experienced First Nations public artists or artist-led teams, to design and install an artwork on a large wall at the new town park currently under construction at 4 Guess Avenue, Wolli Creek.
The wall on the northern boundary of the park measures approximately 9 metres high by 36 metres long, with an area of 327m2.
Artists must respond to key themes about the history, geography and use of the waterways at Wolli Creek, and highlight the significant Aboriginal Heritage of Wolli Creek.
The Cook's River was used for trade between inland people, fishing, and gathering shellfish. It is understood that four different clans lived around the river, including the Darug, Bidjigal, Gameygal and Cadigal people.
The new park, expected to open late 2023 will feature grassed open space for picnicking and play, multi-purpose active space including fitness equipment, shaded play spaces, landscaping with trees and plants, as well as pedestrian lighting through the park.
The largest public artwork currently in Bayside is the 60m long mural, inspired by the Botany Bay shoreline, at Banksia Station.
