The Marshall Liberal Government has today announced $60,000 in funding to reinvigorate the 'Hailstorm Heroes' campaign to support local growers by encouraging consumers to buy imperfect apples.
Apples impacted by the severe hailstorm last November will hit supermarket shelves this week under the brand 'Hailstorm Heroes' launched by Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development Tim Whetstone at the Adelaide Central Market this morning.
Minister Whetstone said the State Government has committed $60,000 to the Apple and Pear Growers Association of SA for the 'Hailstorm Heroes' campaign and urged South Australians to rally behind the state's apple industry.
"As apples hit supermarket shelves this week it is important consumers understand that while there may be small hail marks on the skin, it is still sweet, juicy and delicious on the inside," said Minister Whetstone.
"The Marshall Liberal Government is supporting the state's apple growing industry during these challenging times and that's why we are contributing funding to the 'Hailstorm Heroes' campaign, which instigated more than $1 million in sales from the previous hailstorm event in 2017.
"I'm encouraging all South Australians to buy a bag of 'Hailstorm Heroes' apples from your local supermarket or independent retailer and show your support for our growers who have been impacted by hail for the second year running."
Apple and Pear Growers Association of SA Chief Executive Officer Susie Green said it was more important than ever that South Australians get behind the apple industry which grows 30,000 tonnes of apples worth $63.5 million to the state's economy.
"South Australians purchased more than 1,000 tonnes of fruit through the 'Hailstorm Heroes' campaign last year helping growers salvage returns from their crop and this year it's even more important to support local growers," said Ms Green.
'Hailstorm Heroes' apple packs can be purchased from South Australian Coles, Foodland, IGA, and selected greengrocers. Woolworths will also be selling 'Hailstorm Heroes' as part of its 'Odd Bunch' range.
Royal Galas will be the first 'Hailstorm Heroes' apples available at supermarkets and greengrocers. However, all apple varieties have been impacted and the superficial marks may be more visible on varieties picked in late autumn, like Pink Lady and Granny Smith apples.
