Beer theft leads to car smash

Melbourne Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating a theft, assault and criminal damage which occurred in Carlton on New Year's Day.

Investigators have been told three men were in a car parked near Carlton Gardens when a woman approached them and asked for a beer about 2am.

The men declined and the woman reached into the car and stole one.

The trio got out of the car and followed the woman, who had run off into the park.

They caught up with the woman and one of the men started filming her while another member of the group asked for payment or the return of the beverage.

The woman then grabbed the phone and refused to return it.

One of the men stated they would give her $100 for the return of the phone and the woman agreed.

As they were returning to the car one of the men grabbed the phone back from the woman. This enraged the woman who grabbed a skateboard from a passing skater and started hitting the victim's car with it.

She caused substantial damage to the vehicle and then stole a laptop, two mobile phones and a slab of beer from the car before leaving the area.

Police have released CCTV and images of a woman they believe can assist them with their enquiries.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
