Behind Finish Line: Community Powering Rye Gift

What started as a simple idea between a handful of local footy club volunteers has become one of the biggest and most beloved sporting events on the Mornington Peninsula.

The iconic Rye Gift is celebrating its 50th anniversary this month, and organisers say the magic behind the event hasn't changed, it's still powered by community.

From football and basketball clubs to tennis, Little Athletics and volunteers who quietly get things done, more than 200 locals come together each year to make the carnival happen.

Rye Sports and Social Club secretary and treasurer Gary Sanford says the event is a true team effort. Each club plays its part on the day, from running food stalls and beer tents to helping athletes on the track, creating a seamless experience for competitors and spectators alike.

Held at RJ Rowley Reserve on 10 January 2026, the Rye Gift is more than a race, it's a celebration of local sport, volunteering and what's possible when a community shows up for itself.
