The National Parks and Wildlife Service will be conducting a hazard reduction burn in Belford National Park starting today Wednesday 18 March, weather permitting.
The burn will take place on the northern and western side of Belford National Park between the suburbs of Branxton in the east and Mount Thorley in the west.
This burn will assist protection for the park and adjacent to rural properties on Kirkton Road, Swain Street and East Kelman Street.
Drivers are warned to take care and people with asthma or who are susceptible to respiratory problems are advised to keep clear of the area or stay indoors, close windows and doors and follow their health plan.
NPWS will be assisted by Rural Fire Service crews, and this burn is just one of many being undertaken by NPWS across NSW, as conditions allow.
For their safety, the public should not enter closed areas while the operation is underway.
Roads and trails will be reopened once the area is assessed as safe. Visitors must check NPWS Alerts for up-to-date information on closures.
Planned low to moderate intensity burns also aim to improve the park's biodiversity and provide safer access for firefighters.
If you are vulnerable to smoke, try to stay indoors, keeping doors and windows closed to reduce your exposure.
