Bergin inquiry report tabled in parliament

The Bergin Inquiry report into the suitability of Crown Resorts to hold a licence for Sydney's Barangaroo casino has today been tabled in NSW Parliament.

The report, which is now publicly available on the NSW Parliament https://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/la/papers/Pages/tabled-paper-details.aspx?pk=79129, comprises two sections:

  • Part A (Suitability Review): considers whether Crown Resorts remains suitable to hold a restricted gaming licence for the purposes of the Casino Control Act and the various allegations raised in media reports.
  • Part B (Regulatory Framework and Settings): the efficacy of the objects of the Casino Control Act and ILGA's ability to respond to the growing complexity of risks associated with casinos.

The NSW Independent Liquor & Gaming Authority appointed the Honourable Patricia Bergin SC to conduct the Inquiry in August 2019.

Authority chair Philip Crawford thanked the Commissioner for conducting the year-long public inquiry, which was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Inquiry issued 187 summonses, received more than 80,000 documents and had 60 public hearing days.

The Authority will consider the report at a special meeting to be held on Friday 12 February, and then at its regular monthly board meeting, scheduled for 17 February.

"The report is detailed and complex. It will take time for the Authority to give it proper consideration before determining the most appropriate course of action," Mr Crawford said.
