On Friday, November 14, 2025, Alain Berset, Secretary General of the Council of Europe and former Swiss President, will present a public lecture at the University of Fribourg. Under the title "Science, politiques et le temps de la décision. Apprendre du réel" ("Science, policy and the time for decision. Learning from reality"), Berset will explore the evolving relationship between science and politics as global challenges reshape our world.
In an era defined by interconnected crises, ranging from pandemics and climate emergencies to the digital revolution, decision-makers are finding new ways to engage with science and expertise. Drawing on his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, Alain Berset will examine whether productive cooperation between science and policy can be maintained outside moments of crisis.
Berset is expected to argue that crises should not be viewed solely as exceptions, but as catalysts for more intelligent and sustainable institutional practices. His lecture will delve into how real-world experience can inform a more resilient partnership between scientific experts and policymakers, ultimately benefiting society.
The event will be hosted by the University of Fribourg's Faculty of Science and Medicine, and is open to the public with registration required.
The lecture is part of the Dies academicus programme 2025, during which the university will award Mr Berset an honorary doctorate in recognition of his contribution and achievements.
