The 2026-27 angling season returns tomorrow, with the annual Tagged Trout promotion taking centre stage.
The promotion, run by the Inland Fisheries Service, gives anglers the chance to cast a line in hopes of scoring a tagged trout worth up to $25,000, with multiple other chances to win $5,000.
Minister for Primary Industries and Water, Gavin Pearce, said through our Government's 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future, the Tagged Trout program is back better than ever.
"With the 2026-27 angling season opening tomorrow, fishers across the state will have their chance to reel in 45 trout with prizes attached to them," Minister Pearce said.
"The first tagged trout caught from the Great Lake will win $25,000, with all other tagged trout caught during the promotion period being worth $5,000.
"This year the promotion has even more to offer, with more exciting announcements to come in October to coincide with Trout Weekend 2026, scheduled for the weekend of 10 and 11 October 2026."

* River Derwent
To fish our inland waters and be eligible to catch a prize-winning trout you must hold a current freshwater angling licence, or persons aged under 14 must have permission from their parent or guardian.
To be eligible, a fish must be caught with the correct tag, and the details must be reported with photo evidence to IFS within 72 hours of the capture. Tagged fish from previous tagged fish promotions prior to 2024 are not eligible.
