Home owners are responsible for removing dead birds from their own property. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development advises the following protocol:
- Never touch bird carcasses with your bare hands and wear a face mask (P2/N95 – available from hardware stores), long-sleeved clothing and disposable gloves or gloves that can be disinfected, and shoes that can be cleaned.
- Use tongs, shovels or similar equipment to move the carcass if needed.
- Lift the bird using an inverted plastic bag. Once the carcass is grasped, turn the bag back on itself and tie off. Place the bagged bird inside a second leak-proof plastic bag, being careful not to contaminate the outer bag. Place disposable gloves in this second bag as well.
- Put the double-bagged bird in your red council bin.
- Wash any clothing and clean and disinfect any equipment or material that may have touched the bird.
For sick or dead birds in public spaces avoid contact, record what you see, and report immediately to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
