A Birmingham man has had his sentence increased following an intervention by the Solicitor General, the Rt Hon Lucy Frazer QC MP.
On 19 September 2019, Jamie Taylor, 23, shouted racial abuse at a couple crossing a road in the King's Heath area of Birmingham. When the couple responded, Taylor viciously attacked Amaan Momand while he protected his wife from assault, kicking him to the head and knocking him unconscious. Amaan Momand never regained consciousness and died three days later.
On 18 June 2021, Taylor pleaded guilty to manslaughter at Nottingham Crown Court and was sentenced to 4 years' imprisonment.
Following the Court's decision, the Solicitor General referred Taylor's case to the Court of Appeal under the Unduly Lenient Sentence (ULS) scheme. On 19 August 2021, the Court found his sentence to be unduly lenient and increased it to 5 years and 3 months' imprisonment.
After the hearing at the Court of Appeal the Solicitor General, Rt Hon Lucy Frazer QC MP, said:
Taylor racially abused and attacked a couple who had done him no harm. Amaan stood up for his wife and was attacked in response, kicked to the head and succumbing to his injuries three days later. I am glad that the Court of Appeal saw fit to increase Taylor's sentence today for his part in this callous act of violence, and I hope this offers some comfort to Amaan's family.
