Bland RSL Memorial Walk Officially Opens in West Wyalong
Bland Shire Council, in partnership with the West Wyalong RSL Sub-Branch, is pleased to invite the community to the official opening of the Bland RSL Memorial Walk in West Wyalong.
The ceremony will formally unveil the Memorial Walk, a significant new public space dedicated to honouring the service and sacrifice of local soldiers and service personnel. Located off Clear Ridge Road, the Memorial Walk provides a dignified place for remembrance, reflection and community pride, while also forming an important part of West Wyalong's green corridor walking and cycling network.
The project was made possible through funding secured by Bland Shire Council under the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program (Stages 3 and 4). Council worked closely with the West Wyalong RSL Sub-Branch to develop a concept that provides stronger recognition of those who served, while also relocating damaged memorial plaques previously placed in the ground into a more respectful, visible and enduring setting.
Over approximately three years, the project progressed from initial concept discussions and design development through to funding, construction and completion. The designs and sculptures were developed in-house by Bland Shire Council staff, with Council also overseeing the delivery of the works. This local involvement has ensured the Memorial Walk reflects strong community connection, civic pride and respect for the district's military history.
The Memorial Walk now enhances West Wyalong's shared walking and cycling network, offering residents and visitors the opportunity to pause, reflect and learn about local service history within a thoughtfully designed public space. As part of the broader green corridor connecting West Wyalong and Wyalong, it also encourages active recreation and strengthens links between key community areas.
Importantly, the project adds depth to the town's visitor experience by connecting heritage, public art, open space and storytelling. It encourages visitors to explore beyond the Main Street and experience West Wyalong at a more reflective pace, supporting longer stays and stronger engagement with local places. Lighting has also been installed to improve safety and accessibility, allowing the space to be enjoyed both day and night.
