Tasmania Police is reminding boaters to take a few simple steps to ensure they are prepared before heading onto the water, following a marine safety operation at Port Sorell on Sunday.
Western Marine Police conducted compliance checks on recreational vessels during a two-hour operation, resulting in 15 infringement notices for inadequate or non-compliant safety equipment.
Acting Sergeant Emily Beswick said the operation highlighted the importance of preparedness and the need for boaters to regularly check their safety equipment before every trip.
"As we move into the warmer months and more people are out enjoying Tasmania's waterways, it's important that boaters take responsibility for ensuring their vessel is properly equipped and complies with safety requirements," Acting Sergeant Beswick said.
"Safety equipment is there to protect you, your passengers and others on the water."
"Taking a few minutes to check items such as life jackets, flares, and other required equipment before leaving shore can make a significant difference in an emergency."
"While the majority of boaters do the right thing, it was concerning that all 15 infringements detected during this operation related to safety equipment that was missing, inadequate or not compliant."
"Two of the most common offences detected on Sunday involved failing to carry, properly store, keep ready for immediate use, or maintain mandatory safety equipment, which attracts a $426 fine, and failing to maintain life jackets in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications, which is a $213 fine."
"It seems many people were unaware that life jackets require ongoing maintenance and must be regularly inspected and serviced in line with the manufacturer's instructions to ensure they will perform as intended in an emergency."
"Boaters should take the time to check the condition of their life jackets and other safety equipment before each trip."
Tasmania Police will continue marine safety patrols and compliance operations throughout the boating season to educate water users, promote safe boating practices, and help keep Tasmania's waterways safe.
