Body Found in Gunnedah Swimmer Search

A body has been located following a search for a man missing in the state's north west

About 7.35pm (Tuesday 27 January 2026), emergency services were called to the Namoi River off Old Blue Vale Road, Gunnedah, following reports a swimmer had failed to resurface.

Officers attached to Oxley Police District arrived and were told a 63-year-old man had been swimming in the river when he began to struggle before disappearing in the water.

Local police – with assistance from the Dog Squad, NSW Ambulance, SES, VRA Rescue NSW and NSW Rural Fire Service – commenced a search of the river and nearby properties; however, were unable to locate the man.

About 7:30am today (Thursday 29 January 2026) , the body of a man was located in the Namoi River.

Whilst yet to be formally identified the body is believed to be that of the missing man.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
