Bombshell report alleges $232 million power price rip off

Tasmanian Labor

A bombshell report has alleged Tasmanians have suffered a $232 million power bill rip off since 2014.

The report, produced by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis, alleges TasNetworks overcharged Tasmanians for transmission and distribution services by $232 million between 2014 and 2021.

The report claims these "supernormal profits do not appear consistent with the revenue and pricing principles set out in the National Electricity Law, the National Electricity Objective, or the AER's objective of ensuring that consumers pay no more than necessary for network services."

This extraordinary rip off equates to $811 per household, and follows years of warnings from Labor that the Liberal Government is using our energy businesses as their personal ATM.

Tasmanian families are being smashed by the soaring cost of living-a problem made much worse by the Liberals' recent 12 per cent power price hike-and they will rightly be demanding answers today.

Energy Minister Guy Barnett must address these incredibly serious allegations.
