The joy of books is once again expected to draw significant crowds as Lifeline holds its annual Bookfest fundraiser in Rockhampton on Friday 16 and Saturday 17 May 2025.
Communities Culture and Heritage Councillor and Deputy Mayor Drew Wickerson said Council was pleased to support the event through its Community Assistance Program, with more than five thousand people expected through the doors.
"For more than twenty years families have had this event on their calendar, and we know there are many who follow the Lifeline Bookfests across the state to find a hidden gem or expand their libraries," Cr Wickerson said.
"Events like the Lifeline Bookfest are so important as they bring families and people from outside of the region together, strengthening our local economy and community.
"All funds raised from this event go to Lifeline's services including the 13 11 14 suicide prevention Crisis Line. Council's $7,000 grant will ensure that funds raised go directly to those in need."
Council has supported more than twenty local and regional events this financial year with grant funding, providing nearly $200,000 to enhance the region's well-being.
"The Lifeline Bookfest fits the bill in so many ways for the Community Assistance Program, as reading is not only a wonderful past-time, but it is critical for developing young minds and hearts, and to keep the young at heart mentally active," Cr Wickerson said.
"We know that daily reading time for young ones is important so Lifeline's Bookfest will help parents, families, and individuals to continue to build their love and library of books and find the wonder within the pages.
"We encourage residents to visit the Lifeline Bookfest to see the enormous variety of books they can take home this year, while supporting an essential life-saving service.
"And as winter approaches, Lifeline will also provide clothing for $2 which is another important element to the event."
Lifeline's Business Manager Belinda Bath said they were grateful to receive funding from the Rockhampton Regional Council for Bookfest.
"The costs to hold the event are increasing annually and it's important that every dollar raised reaches our valued crisis support line," Ms Bath said.
"This year we hope to raise $40,000 towards our crisis support services.
"Lifeline Bookfest really is a great event, providing our community with affordable books and clothing, with the added benefit of knowing this money is put back into the community to provide much needed crisis support services.
"There are all categories of books imaginable from romance to religion, cookbooks and craft, sport, travel and rare finds, and our famous $2 clothing sale is a must-see."
Lifeline Bookfest is being held at the Robert Schwarten Pavilion, Rockhampton Showgrounds, 8.30am to 4pm, Friday 16 and Saturday 17 May. For more details about the event visit Lifeline's Facebook page.
