The Department of Home Affairs has commenced a whole-of-government review into border permits and associated licences in a bid to simplify and streamline processes for industry.
The Minister for Home Affairs Peter Dutton said the Border Permits Review will identify opportunities to reduce government intervention, remove barriers for international trade and reduce regulatory burden for industry.
"The Review is a critical step in the Morrison Government's agenda to modernise international trade flows that cross Australia's border," Mr Dutton said.
"Through trade modernisation we aim to create a future international trade system for Australia that is seamless, digital, automated and user-friendly."
"Australia's international trade regulatory environment is complex and involves over thirty permit issuing authorities and government agencies."
"After consultation with government agencies and industry and reviews of Australia's international trade system, it is clear we need to look at how we can streamline international trade."
The Review's Terms of Reference specify the imported and exported goods that are subject to the Review and are accessible on the department's website at www.homeaffairs.gov.au.
The Review is subject to a public consultation process.
Stakeholders will be able to make submissions to the Review through the website.
The Review's outcomes will be reported to government by end-December 2019.
